Ozone Action Day
Friday, August 2

The air quality forecast for Friday, August 2, is that GROUND-LEVEL OZONE will be in the unhealthy range, with the Air Quality Index reaching 172.  Active children and adults, as well as people with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor activity and physical exertion.  Ozone levels generally peak during late afternoon and early evening hours.  The Air Pollution Control District and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management have issued this HEALTH WARNING for Friday. 

Friday’s forecast marks the highest ozone level predicted for the 2002 ozone season to date. Ozone levels are expected to remain high through the weekend.

Here are actions that you can take on Ozone Action Days or any day to improve local air quality:

• Ride the bus--call TARC at 585-1234 for route information.
• Share a ride--call Ticket to Ride at 267-5400.
• Walk and bike more, especially for short trips.
• Combine several errands in one car trip when possible.
• Share rides with friends and family members.
• Avoid using gasoline-powered lawn equipment on Ozone Action Days. Mowing your yard for an hour with a gas-powered lawnmower creates as much pollution as driving a newer-model car 200 miles!
• Slow down! Driving 55 mph instead of 65 mph reduces pollution by 10%.
• Keep your tires inflated and get better fuel economy (up to 20% higher).
• Avoid driving, especially during peak hours--7 to 9 am and 4 to 6 pm.
• Don’t top off fuel tanks.
• Avoid idling. Walk inside instead of using drive-through windows.
• Keep your car/boat/lawn equipment properly maintained.
• Make use of alternative fuel vehicles if available.
